When a timber deck is being installed, the small details make a big difference to how the finished deck looks and performs over time. One of those details is keeping the spacing between deck boards consistent.
Why use spacers between timber deck boards?
Spacers help keep the gap between boards uniform while the deck is being fixed down. That gives the deck a cleaner, more professional appearance and helps each board stay aligned with the next.
Correct spacing also gives timber room for natural movement as moisture conditions change. Timber is a natural material, so boards can expand and contract. Leaving a controlled gap helps reduce the risk of boards pressing hard against one another as conditions change.
Drainage and ventilation matter too
The gap between deck boards allows water to drain through rather than sitting on the deck surface. It also assists air movement around the timber. Both are important considerations in Durban’s humid coastal climate, particularly around pools and other outdoor areas exposed to regular moisture.
Good decking is about consistent workmanship
In the short video above, you can see the spacers being used as the deck boards are fixed. It is a simple part of the installation, but doing it consistently across the deck helps produce straight lines, even gaps and a better overall finish.
