A well-designed pergola does more than provide shade. It can define an outdoor entertainment area, complement the architecture of a home and introduce materials that look better as they age.
This recent project is a good example of combining two materials we work with regularly: structural steel and balau hardwood.
A steel structure softened with balau
The primary pergola structure is fabricated in steel, creating clean lines and a strong contemporary framework. Across the overhead structure we installed 30 × 60 mm balau hardwood slats at approximately 60 mm spacing.
The repeated timber slats soften the appearance of the steel while allowing natural light through. As the sun moves, the open slatted roof creates changing patterns of light and shadow instead of completely enclosing the outdoor area.
Why balau works so well for pergolas
Balau is particularly well suited to exposed outdoor features where appearance matters. Its rich natural colour provides a strong contrast against darker steelwork and brings warmth to contemporary architecture.
Using relatively slim 30 × 60 mm profiles also keeps the overhead structure visually light. The approximately 60 mm gaps create a consistent architectural rhythm while retaining the open-air character of the entertainment space.
Timber and steel working together
Projects like this demonstrate why timber and steel do not have to be competing choices. Steel can provide the structural framework and crisp architectural lines, while hardwood provides texture, colour and a more natural finish.
For homeowners in Durban and the wider KwaZulu-Natal area, this type of hybrid pergola can be custom designed around the house, patio and entertainment area rather than treated as a standard off-the-shelf structure.
Thinking about a custom pergola?
The Wood Joint specialises in outdoor timber construction including balau pergolas, timber decking, screens and custom timber detailing. For projects combining steel and timber, we can also bring together the complementary capabilities of The Wood Joint and The Awning Joint.
