Wooden Pergolas in Durban and the Upper Highway
The Wood Joint builds custom wooden pergolas and timber sun screens for outdoor spaces in Durban, Hillcrest, Kloof and the Upper Highway. Whether you want a pergola over a deck, patio or entrance, the design can be adapted to suit the space and the look of your home.
A wooden pergola is an overhead structure designed using timber beams, purlins and slats. It is largely decorative: an open pergola does not prevent rain and provides limited shade depending on how many slats are installed.
Sometimes called sun screens, pergolas can be built to provide more shade at certain times of day by changing the number and spacing of the slats. There are many possible designs, subject to the site and budget.
A pergola can be attached to the main building and supported by posts at the front edge, or built as a freestanding structure with posts to ground. Roof sheeting can also be installed where rain protection is required, although the covering and supporting structure should be chosen to suit the project. Balau can create an attractive timber finish, while thatching laths can give a more rustic appearance.
