Durban North Balau Deck Update: Boards Ready for Trimming and Picket Balustrade Next

Balau deck boards extending beyond the frame, ready to be trimmed straight on the Durban North build

Our 5 m × 3 m balau deck build in Durban North is moving into its next stage. Following the concrete footings and level framework, the balau deck boards are now going down and the outdoor space is taking shape.

The deck boards are deliberately left long during installation. A single straight finishing line comes next.

Why the deck boards are left long

You will notice that the board ends project beyond the frame and do not yet form a straight edge. This is intentional during the build. We leave the boards long while positioning and fixing them, then mark the finished edge and trim them together to achieve a clean, straight line.

Today, 2 November 2026, the team is scheduled to cut these ends straight. The photographs show the installation before that finishing cut, rather than the finished deck edge.

Balau vertical picket balustrade starts today

Work on the balustrade is also scheduled to commence today. We are using balau in a vertical picket style, bringing matching hardwood detailing to the edges of the deck. The upright pickets will give the deck a classic timber finish while retaining views out into the garden.

From a solid frame to the finishing details

This follows our earlier Durban North progress update on the concrete footings, level framework and straight joists. With the boards being fitted, the next visible changes will be the neatly trimmed perimeter and the new picket balustrade.

The project remains a work in progress, and we will share more as the finishing details come together.
